Part I

1) Suppose we have a prism such that one of the sides can pivot, while the

other side always stays normal to the incoming light. In other words, we

assume that the apex angle (= internal incident angle i) can be varied. Let's

determine D.

Vary the index of refraction of the prism to see how the angle of deviation and

the critical angle change. Extra dense flint glass has an index of refraction of

approximately 1.70. What is the angle of deviation for a 40 degree prism made

from this glass? What is the critical angle for this material?

Part II

1)For an object 3 m below the surface of a liquid, make a plot of the

apparent depth versus the index of refraction of the liquid. Assume an

index of refraction range between 1 and 1.8. For what value of the index

of refraction is the apparent depth equal to the actual depth?
