  1. Some people question why we need ethics when we have laws.  What is your position on this?  Please list and explain the five limitations of law.

  1. Discuss 3 of the “Pitfalls of Personal Experience and Common Sense”

Pitfalls of Personal Experience and Common Sense

  • Overgeneralization.  This occurs when we take plausible information and apply it to other situations.  Typically, the original information is based on a narrow experience and is used to describe a whole group or class.  For example, if a dog bites me, I may overgeneralize that all dogs are mean and will bite me.
  • Selective observation.  This occurs when we narrowly observe people or events based on a preconceived expectation.  Then, we confirm our expectation by using this narrow data.  For example, after overgeneralizing that all dogs are mean and will bite me, I will be more focused on the aggressive behavior of dogs that I encounter.  This selective observation will reinforce my expectation of dogs being mean.
  • Premature closure.  This occurs when we make a decision without gathering enough information on the topic.  Both of the examples above would be cases of premature closure because I never really gathered enough information about the behavior of dogs.
  • Halo effect.  This occurs when we allow a person’s or an institute’s prestige to persuade us, regardless of the evidence.  For example, if a person with authority told me that dogs are mean, I accept it as truth without evidence.
  • False consensus.  This occurs when we project our way of thinking onto others.  We assume that other people think the same way that we do.  For example, if I think that dogs are mean, I tend to project this on others, and I believe that other people I meet also think dogs are mean.
