Project #50325 - 4-6 Philosophy Paper

Topic: Write a secondary source of EITHER Moran’s “Doing alchemy” or Shapin’s “Pump and

Circumstance: Robert Boyle’s Literary Technology.” The critique portion of your analysis

should reference the corresponding primary sources we read for class (Agrippa for Moran,

selections of Pascal, Harvey, and Boyle for Shapin).

4-6 Pages double spaced.

The purpose of a secondary source analysis is to summarize and critique an argument written by

another historian. It generally consists of four parts:

1. Introduction, which introduces the secondary source and its author, as well as the general

topic.

2. Summary of the article’s argument in which you present the author’s main arguments

and conclusions. It is often good to illustrate the author’s main points with specific

examples from the article.

3. Critique of the article, in which you point out any weak points in the article. These can

relate to logical inconsistencies, evidence the author didn’t consider, etc. For this

assignment, you should specifically consider how well the author’s argument reflects the

primary source we read in class. Does the author’s argument apply to the primary source

in question? If so (or if not), should the author’s argument be changed in any way?

4. Brief conclusion.

Will provide articles if someone chooses to do the assignment. Can provide them ahead of time as well.
