In the last class we broke into the small groups in order to take a position either pro or con on the gun control issue. To remind everyone of the format. Each student is supposed to select their own person to represent a point of view on the gun control debate. For example, as we have discussed in class, someone could be a police officer, social science resesarcher, gun victim, gun rights advocate, relatvie of a victim, local government official, witness, etc. Don't forget, who you are and the position you take may not be one you would agree with iin real life but your remarks and presentation must be consistent with the person you have chosen.
Each student is responsible for preparing a paper that should be about 3.5 to 5 pages long as your testimony in favor of to gun control.
It is key to remember that each student must present his/her own paper but also remember that you are working as a team so your testimony should compliment one anothers arguments and not contradict it. Each group will have about 20 minutes or approximately 5 minuntes per person. As you will be presenting your remarks before the class, that means you should practice them so that you feel very comfortable with your testimony. At the same time, give thought to your opponents likely points of attack so that you can try to defuse some of thier arguments as well.
When you come to class make sure that you have a copy of the assignment for me to keep and grade from.
Your grade will be based on the following:
the quality of writing in your testimony. the clarity and cohesiveness of your testimony will improve your grade.
the quality of your oral presentation. a good strong, clear speaking voice and comfort with what you are saying will help your grade.
your ability to respond to any questions. this reflects your depth of knowledge about the testimonty you are presenting and your ability to think on your feet.
