Project #51280 - Acquiring a Distinctive or Quirky Organization

Living in a big city, Jamie always starts her morning early to stay ahead of the traffic that signals the beginning of the day. As she rounds the corner, she sees the circular green business logo that brings a smile to her face. As she walks in, she is immediately hit with the familiar aroma that already helps to wake her mind. She excitedly sees that it’s finally “that time of year” to order her favorite holiday coffee. After she places her order, she taps into the free WiFi and takes in the soft classical music playing in the background. Around her, others are chatting quietly, or focusing intently on what looks to be important work. She opens her laptop, takes a sip of coffee, and is on her way to a great day.

The general population has outstanding brand loyalty. In the scenario depicted above, you probably gathered that Jamie was at Starbucks, a well-known establishment that has people driving out of way to drink their coffee and sit on their lush couches. Starbucks is not the only organization to create this type of cult following, however. Organizations such as Banana Republic, Harley-Davidson, Whole Foods, Go Daddy, and Cracker Barrel have people singing their praises for the distinctive culture that they provide. Simply put, excellent service equals excellent brand loyalty. When acquiring or merging with an organization, it is important to determine how an organization’s 4Ps affects the loyalty of their customers. For example, if you decide to merge another organization’s logo with yours, could this affect the way in which people perceive the brand? What about if you transform the casual, dated atmosphere of an acquired store or restaurant into a trendy space with modern art hung on the walls? How might changing the looks or policies of an organization alienate its customer base?

In this week’s assignment, assess the value of an organization’s unique culture. In addition, you analyze communication and negotiation strategies that can be used to mitigate conflict when business imperatives dictate that an acquired company should retain its independence.

Write a 1-2 page APA style paper a cohesive and scholarly response based on your readings and research this week that addresses the following:

·         Assess the value of a unique culture.

o    Identify at least three benefits of keeping the target organization’s culture after it has been acquired.

o    Identify at least two negative consequences that might result when attempting to mold the target organization’s culture into the acquiring organizational culture.

·         Analyze communication and negotiation strategies that can mitigate conflict.

o    Describe at least one way conflict can result from each organization continuing to hold the 4Ps of its culture. 

o    Propose at least two HR communication and/or negotiation strategies that could decrease the chances of rumors, conflict, and/or a failed M&A.  

o    Propose two HR communication and/or negotiation strategies that could most effectively decrease the chances of rumors, conflict, and/or a failed M&A.
