Project #51508 - education class

7. Culturally Responsive Teaching Vision (20 points)

Due: Dec. 10, 2014, 6:00 pm EST

Length: 8-10 pages, double-spaced

The guiding question for this assignment: What knowledge of self, schooling and society is necessary to create equitable learning opportunities for all students?

It is hoped that as you define your personal beliefs on teaching and learning in relation to issues of equity and diversity you will arm yourself with powerful principles and rationales that will shape your personal pedagogy and empower you to be an excellent teacher of all children.

In the final paper you will consider your experiences and prior beliefs that you believe have had significant impact on how you view the world and, therefore, inform how you relate to your classmates in this and other courses and your K-12 students. Then reflect on new experiences this course has either provided or helped you to reflect upon. Discuss how your new experiences and reflections have changed or developed throughout our course. Finally, describe new goals and areas for personal growth you have developed as a result of this course, as well as your plans for creating a socially just classroom environment.

Using the course readings and themes as a framework, you should reflect on and critically analyze:

1) your past experiences that you believe most influence your present attitudes about privilege and

marginalization and your present beliefs regarding race, ethnicity, geographic origin, language, socioeconomic class background, sex, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, physical/developmental/psychological ability, age/generation, physical appearance, and environmental concern;

2) your understanding of the concepts of equity, inequity, equality, inequality, diversity, teaching, schooling, multicultural education, individual/cultural/institutional demographics, and sociocultural/socioeconomic/sociopolitical systems of privilege and marginalization in both a U.S. and extra-U.S. context;

3) the kinds of personal transformation you believe you might need to embrace in order to become a better teacher of all children, including what kinds of knowledge bases you need to develop to foster this personal change, as well as what kinds of personal, academic, and professional experiences you need to have to become adept in cross-cultural interaction; and,

4) a comprehensive assessment of your current capacity as a multicultural educator, in particular, your adeptness in helping all students to gain full access to participation in democracy through educational achievement.

Late papers will be penalized by one letter grade.
