Selct four questions above, write one page essay for each! ablow is the strcture you  can use.

  1. Compare, contrast, and evaluate the moral ideals of the arhat in the Theraveda tradition and the bodhisattva in the Mahayana tradition.   How is the ideal of detachment related to compassion in the prajnaparamita texts?

  2. What is the doctrine of Interdependent Arising (aka, Dependent Origination)?  What reason/argument is there to think that this doctrine is true?  What is the strongest argument/objection against the doctrine of Interdependent Arising?

  3. Explain the three-stage technique of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction used in the Perfection of Wisdom (prajnaparamita) texts like theDiamond Sutra, as well as the paradox that forced them to adopt this technique.

  4. Nagarjuna poses a tetralemma (catuskoti) concerning the self, according to which claiming that the self is identical to its constituent parts, claiming that the self is not identical to its constituent parts, claiming that it is both identical and not identical, or claiming that it is neither identical nor non-identical, all result in unacceptable dilemmas.  What does Nagarjuna think we should conclude from this?  Why?  Is he right?

  5. In Yogacara, tathata (“things in themselves”) can be known only in mindfulness, “when conceptual construction has been left aside” and there is no subject or object.  But if things in themselves are not known as objects, in what sense are they known?  Is to know a thing “as it is in itself” to know that thing as not distinct from oneself?

  6. What are the important differences between Nagarjuna and Shankara’s respective two-tiered doctrines of conventional versus ultimate truth?

  7. Why does Ramanuja deny the coherence of the concept of nirgunaBrahaman?  What consequences does this have for the ways in which it is possible to speak of God or gods?

  8. Why did the Buddhists adopt the vocabulary of Daoism in presenting their doctrines to the Chinese?  What sorts of misunderstandings, innovations,  and permanent changes in Buddhist doctrines  resulted from this?

  9. What is the most important “take-away” from this course, in terms of what we can learn today from the sages of ancient Asia?

Writing Strategy

1.  This is to be an argumentative essay where you choose a side, state and defend a particular thesis, not merely a neutral report.

2.  Your thesis should be clearly stated in the opening paragraph of your essay.

3.  Actually argue for your thesis, that is, give reasons that are not only sufficient for your own adoption of the thesis in question, but rather reasons that anyone who carefully considers them would be similarly inclined to adopt   The point is not merely to explain yourself, or even to explain the Sage, but to persuade your audience of the truth of your thesis.

4.  Avoid appeals to authority; do not assume your audience acknowledges the same authorities you usually rely upon.

5.  Write not only so that you can be understood, but so that you could not possibly be misunderstood.  Maximize clarity and simplicity over technical jargon.

6.  It is a good idea to show that you have anticipated, and have ready answers for, the most serious objections to your thesis.

7.  Many classes discourage the first-person perspective in essay-writing, seeking to eschew the appearance of subjectivity.  Philosophy is inevitably personal, however, and some of the very best philosophical writing has an almost autobiographical feel to it.  Therefore, use of the personal pronoun “I” is permissible for this particular assignment.

8.  Finished compositions must be at least four full pages in length, typed, double-spaced, in a 10 or 12-point font, with one-inch margins on all sides.
