Assignment Objectives

·         Read for comprehension; draw out salient points.

·         Directly apply author’s ideas to real world context (in writing.)

·         Paraphrase and selectively quote from sources.

·         Construct a thesis with supporting topic sentences and supporting details.

Assignment

Write a minimum 4 paged essay double-spaced, Times New Roman, on ONE of the following topics. PICK ONLY ONE TOPIC.

  1. Research the trajectory of a typical revolution and show how closely Animalism in Orwell’s Animal Farm, conforms to the pattern. Please cite any research sources you use in a Works Cited page.

  1. Compare events in Orwell’s Animal Farm to present-day events in present-day U.S. , present-day in any other country, (or any other time in U.S. or world history, for that matter.) (Your thesis will be something about the similarity between the two.) Please cite any research sources you use in a Works Cited page.

  1. Consider the construction of identity in characters in both Wilson's Fences and Orwell’s Animal Farm. How do characters perceive/define themselves? How does their reaction to stimuli or events showcase the personal characteristics they identify with?

  1. Write an essay on social class in Orwell’s Animal Farm.  How is the text an allegory for social classes and what does Orwell seem to suggest about each one? Please cite any research sources you use in a Works Cited page.

I suggest that you brainstorm in map/cluster or list form before even trying to start writing. This will help you arrive at a very tight thesis. Make sure you have examples from the book, with page numbers and proper citation. Also, mention the title and author of the novel, in order to provide context for your readers.

I will be looking for:

·         quotes from the novel

·         strong topic sentences

·         a well-developed introduction and conclusion that create context

·         excellence in presentation (no excessive sentence-level errors, etc.)
