Project #52509 - communication homework

Instructions

Total Points Possible: 60

COM 102 is a UCORE class, meaning it fulfills the communication requirement of all WSU undergraduate students. The UCORE remit has a feature that allows students to re-visit an assignment. This means taking the feedback from the instructor, reflecting on one’s performance, doing a thoughtful self-assessment, and coming back and reworking the assignment. This gives students a great chance to fix problems, and also to take their work to a new and higher level of achievement.

#1) Presentations with scores up to 89.9% (B+): Reflect on the feedback you received from your INSTRUCTOR, and examine your performance and your score along three of the dimensions in the rubric. Make a plan to improve upon the performance, and write up an informal 300 word document demonstrating that you understand what it was about your performance that earned it the score it got. Make a plan to improve your performance on the three dimensions you have chosen from the rubric. Also demonstrate that you understand why those three dimensions were deficient, and the effect those deficiencies would have in terms of communication, that is, the effect on the audience. Then re-do your presentation and upload your new recording to the assignment dropbox before the deadline, labeling it as “Your Name SELF-ASSESSMENT.” Also submit your 300 word document on Angel as directed by your INSTRUCTOR.

#2) Presentations with scores of 90% (A-) and higher: You will not re-record your presentation. Instead, reflect on your presentation and how and why it fulfilled the top-criteria on the rubric’s dimensions. Compose a 500-600 word self-evaluation essay presenting a rationale detailing the reasons why the dimensions matter, how your presentation achieved that, and the probable effects of those features on communication with the audience. In addition, in comparison with your introduction speech, address how you have grown in this course, in terms of your presentation quality, what has been aspect(s) have been most challenging for you and where/how would you like to continue to improve?

Obviously in an essay as short as 500-600 words you will want to be selective, and perhaps you’ll want to identify just three or four features to discuss. Submit your essay to the assignment dropbox.

Notes For All

We do not use online grading rubrics for the Self-Assessment. Instead, your instructor will evaluate your work and assign a single score for you, 64/65, 59/65, or whatever, and enter that into your gradebook.

For Mode #1 submissions the essay and the new recording are considered together, as parts of a whole effort. Your instructor will look at the documents to see how well you’ve chosen your three dimensions to improve. For both modes, your instructor will consider whether the choices of features to discuss were apt. It is unlikely the choices can capture the whole story, but your INSTRUCTOR will ask: Did they capture an aspect, a portion, that is meaningful and useful in terms of self-assessment and in the case of Mode #1, improvement?

For Mode #1 your instructor will weigh the written portion and the recorded portion roughly equally- very approximately at about one half of the points for each.

For both modes, avoid merely re-stating obvious things that the rubric already put forth. Assess how your presentation served the communication purposes as we’ve been studying them in class thus far. For Mode #1, for example, don’t just say “I didn’t have citations, so I’ll add some.” Rather, mention the lack of citations, of course, but explain why that is a problem, and what “fixing it” would mean for the communication. For example, one might say something along the lines of: “I had no citations, which might leave the audience wondering how to process my claims. By giving my sources for the claim, I would be indicating to the audience that while this comment was an opinion, to be sure, it was the educated and well-formed opinion of a leading expert and authority in the field. Thus it could be given weight and credence.” You get the idea of the logic we are looking for.

Lack of specificity in the written portion, as well as lack of relevance, and a lack of completeness will lower your score. For Mode #1 your instructor will then determine how well you’ve carried out your plan to improve your three chosen features—how well your new performance actually embodies your good intentions outlined in your written document. Leaving the “deficient” elements pretty much still in place in the new recorded version, or making inadequate changes and little improvement on the three dimensions you have selected will lower your score.

Your writing should communicate accurately, but it can also be a bit informal at the same time. Please be very specific referring to the dimensions you have chosen and the relevant course principles of communication that apply. Relate those principles to the practical business of your presentation, your audience, and how to better fit those needs.
