Project #52612 - Essay

You should NOT employ external resources. You need to complete the exam based on the novels, lectures and other ancillary materials that can be found only on our BB. Nothing outside our BB should be referenced. What you do need to reference, however, is every piece of material that can be found on our BB.

First Part (50 points):

Choose 10 of the following characters and analyze them carefully. In your careful analysis, you MUST include textual evidence or support (employ proper citation). I will NOT consider answers that fail to include carefully chosen textual evidence or support. In other words, those answers that include NO specific reference to the novel will be discarded automatically. No partial credit will be given in such cases. The required minimum word count is 175 for each ID answer. Note that I am asking for an analysis and NOT a general description of the character.  An analysis must be focused and critical (must reflect a view or interpretation of your own).  Ask yourself how the character is made or represented; what its overall purpose in the narrative is; any changes or shift that are noted; etc. At least TWO ID answers must focus on each of the three novels: The Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Hour of the Star, Distant Star, and Second Out

The gauchos; The Unitarian; Juan Dhalman; Emma Zunz; Chac Mool; Alicia; Mercedes; Molina; Valentín; Molina’s mother; Marta; Cat People’s protagonist; Police officials; Macabéa; Rodrigo; Madame Carlota; Olímpico; North-Easterners; Wieder; Soto; Stein; Garmendia sisters; Bibiano; Ruíz-Tagle; Ledesma; Verani; Firpo; Dempsey; Mahler; Narrator(specify from which novel or short story).

Second Part (50 points):

For this section you will write an essay that analyzes the figure of the narrator in at least TWO of the novels we have read in the course. Who is the narrator? How does it operate? How has it been constructed? These are merely suggested questions, but your analysis should engage in a comparative exercise to analyze the make-up of the narrative figure of two of the novels. In your careful analysis, you MUST include textual evidence or support (employ proper citation). I will NOT consider answers that fail to include carefully chosen textual evidence or support from the actual novels. The required minimum word count is 900 (three pages double-space).  Note that I am asking for an analysis and NOT a general description of the figure of the narrator.  An analysis must be focused and critical (must reflect a view or interpretation of your own).

Important: If you copy or paraphrase someone else’s text or ideas you MUST make it evident and clear (include full citation).  Whenever you fail to do so, it is considered plagiarism. Any level of plagiarism will cause an automatic F in the exam and possibly in the course
