Project #52722 - Sociology Research

PART I: SHORT RESPONSE QUESTIONS

Directions: Please provide responses to questions below.  Pease use proper APA citation for any resources that you use.  Your responses should be 1 to 2 paragraphs in length for each question.

1.      How does a researcher use the conceptual definition of a construct in operationalization and conceptualization?

2.      How do reliability and validity differ?  How do they complement each other?  Can a measure be reliable but invalid?  Can a measure be unreliable but valid?  How?

3.      List the levels of measurement.  Explain how each higher level of measurement builds on lower levels of measurement.  Give two examples of each level of measurement.

4.      How do qualitative and quantitative ideas about validity differ?

5.      While scale and index are used interchangeably, there is a distinct difference between them.

6.      How can a measure have unidimensionality but also use multiple indicators which capture all parts of the content of a construct?

7.      Convergent validity and discriminant validity are both components of construct validity.  What makes convergent and discriminant validity components of construct validity?  What distinguishes the difference between convergent and discriminant validity?

8.      List three types of measurement reliability.  What is the difference among these three types of reliability?  How does each form of reliability contribute to the overall measurement reliability?

9.      What is the difference between nonprobability sampling and probability sampling?  When is each sampling method appropriate?

10.    Often researchers want to sample a network of people or organizations.  What sampling technique(s) would be best?  Why is this technique useful for this type of research?

11.    Explain how one would select a simple random sample from a population.  Be sure to include the appropriate selection of a sampling frame and sampling ratio.

12.    When is random-digit dialing (RDD) used?  What is the population in RDD?  Does RDD avoid sampling frame issues?

13.    How do researchers decide how large of a sample to use?  What are some of the issues that influence this decision?

14.    What is the central limit theorem?  How does this theorem justify the use of random samples?

15.    It is easy to suggest that a bigger sample is more representative of a population than a smaller sample.  Is this always true?  Explain when a larger sample in itself is not always the best.

PART II: COURSE RESEARCH PAPER

Directions:This course contains a research paper.  In each module, you will work on an element of the research paper and then will submit the final research paper in Module 8.  In this module, you will conduct qualitative and quantitative sampling.

Step #1: after conducting your research, ask yourself if your original hypothesis has slightly changed?  Explain.

Research Hypothesis

“Women are assigned lower rank roles and earn much less than men when assigned similar roles in the society regardless of ability and as a result are rank lower than men in educational, economic and professional achievement.”

Part Two: Course Research

King, K. (2001). Productive agencies of feminist theory: The work it does, Feminist Theory, 94-98.

The Journal of Classical Sociology by Kinginspects how women's work orientation and experience differ from men's for the reason that they are given lesser roles, despite many of them having excellent qualifications. In this regard, King argues that employers tend to have a preformed mentality to the effect that women have an inferior role in the eventual business venture. The journal explicitly shows the diverse functions given to women and men in organizations give healthier explanation to gender distinction, incorporating the sexual distribution of manual labor in the family unit. The author spotlights on how women for ages have been alienated and classified as other entities that may not be vital in patriarchal civilizations. As a result, women are consequently deemed to be mere objects in addition to being denied the prospect for self-realization attributable to the few chances and opportunities they get hold of in jobs (King, 2001).

Mcnay, L. (2003). Agency, anticipation and indeterminacy in feminist theory, Feminist Theory, 139-148.

The Feminist Theory by Mcnay explains that women enclose the identical capability as men for ethical reckoning, but the sexist outline of the allotment of labor predominantly, has traditionally starved women the prospect to articulate and observe this way of thinking. In this regard, the journal explains that for ages, women have been cut off from the private sphere of diverse family units and, subsequently, are left voiceless in matters that relate to the public sphere. The author explains that even after they gain access to the public sphere, an expectation on them that relates to managing the private sphere in addition to taking care of family responsibility and child nurture shows up. In this regard, marriage is a place of gender dissimilarity and subsequently, women rarely gain advantage from it as men do. Without a doubt, wedded women have superior intensities of nervous tension than unmarried personalities. In accordance with the journal, the sexual distribution of manual labor in the public along with private spheres ought to be changed so as the womenfolk can attain equal opportunity (Mcnay, 2003).
