Project #52919 - Film and Narrative

You will present an adaptation of a well-known fairy tale or fable. Students may choose the manner of presentation, such as a storyboard, a photographic montage, or a Powerpoint

Offer a brief rationale explaining your choices (300 words).

This assignment builds on the skills you’ve been developing in identifying narrative strategies in various texts; you will know by now that literature and film use different narrative strategies. You have also been practising noting the major themes and ideas at work in your set texts. For this assignment you will use these skills, as well as developing creative processes for translating the substance of your analysis into another medium.

The process:

Select your fairy tale or fable. A well-known story will work best, as you are depending upon your audience being familiar with it.

Think about the steps involved in translating your story from shared oral knowledge, into a written document, and then into another medium. You will need to consider the identification of narrative elements.

A key step is translating your written document into a visual representation. How will you identify characters? How will you express the passing of time? How much detail will you offer? How many ‘scenes’ will each narrative/plot point receive? You will need to consider strategies for adaptation and visual communication.

The creative medium:

Depending on your skills and interests, you may choose the manner of presentation.

Storyboard: pre-visualising tool that involves drawing scenes in a frame, much like a comic.

Tableaux: a theatrical technique that involves creating frozen scenes with people’s bodies. These will be photographed for presentation.

Amateur film: this involves scriptwriting, acting, and familiarity with software. Avoid dependence upon narrative voiceover.

Photographic Power Point Presentation of storyboard or tableaux.
Dramatic script reading. Avoid dependence on stage direction; it must be dialogue-driven.
