Format :

for seminar paper #1:

Quotations requirements:

Two short quotations introduced with a short signal phrase such as "Lorde asserts" or "Simic remembers" and including the page reference in parentheses at the end. In class, we will have gone over how to do this

You may include more brief quotations ( though most of the writing in the seminar paper must be your own), but two are required

The Questions:

1. Questions? Confusinos? What parts of both essays confuse you or do you have questions about? Ask your questions and then spend a few sentences speculating about what the answers might be. If you have no confusions, then discuss whatever part of each essay seems particulary complicated, ambiguous or open to interpretation. Offer your ideas about these parts of the reading.

2. In each essay what particular moment or phrase or sentence stands out to you as interesting or meaningful? Why do you think it stands out and how is it meaningful? How does that moment connect to the overall meaning of the whole essay?

3. Though Lorde says that the story she tells here really happened to herit is as carefully constructed as any short story One aspect of story construction she pays special attention to is setting things up in such a way that the dramatic moment will have its greatest impact. What is the dramatic moment in The fourth of july.? How does Lorde tell the story in a way that makes that moment especially effective?

4. Simic writes " I realized how much I owe to my boredom" par 3

What does he owe?

5. Both of these are narrative essays : They tell a story about an experience the author had in both essays, this narrative serves a purpose, supporting the main idea, or thesis. How has each author shaped the narrative to support this thesis? How are these essays differnet from just telling the story of what happened?
