Doomsday Economics Research Paper

MrGibbons.org

Instructions: Alas, our time on Doomsday Economics has come to it’s pinnacle moment, our time to write a research paper. We have spent the last few weeks looking at the multiple causes of the Housing Market Crash of 2008. Your paper will be about ONE of these causes. Some possible causes that are encouraged to follow, but not limited to, are:

  • Government Deregulation

  • Careless Practices by S&P and Moody’s

  • Predatory Sub-Prime Loans

  • Greed by Investment Banks

  • Carelessness by AIG

  • Credit Default Swaps

You will spend the next few weeks, both in class, and out of class, reading, researching, and writing about the topic of your choosing. At the end, you will have a document that you are proud of. (How could you not, you worked like crazy to complete it.) Once you have chosen your topic, you will create a thesis sentence that is more specific than your topic alone. This thesis sentence will become the focal point of your work.

Paper Length: Your paper should be between 5 to 8 pages. This includes your introduction, body paragraphs, and research. This does not include your Title Page or your Works Cited page.

Format: Please type your paper (Google Document only). Please keep all fonts and sizes standard. That means size 12, Times New Roman Font with 1” margins. Please double space your paper. All citations and works sited should be in APA format.

Sources: You MUST use a minimum of four different sources. You are encouraged to use more. Accurate and reliable sources strengthen your writing and make it more academically sound. Since the Housing Market Collapse is such a recent event, the majority of your sources may come from Internet Sources. Please be aware that Internet Sources must be reliable and include the author, publication, and links so that anyone can find the source you use. You MUST use our class text, The Big Short, as one of your sources. Please remember to look for both primary and secondary sources.

Works Cited/Bibliography: You must include a bibliography or Works Cited for your sources. This is separate from your annotated bibliography. All entries must follow APA formatting. Please use http://citationmachine.net/index2.php or http://www.bibme.org/ for help with the formatting style.

  • Corruption had become rampant within the rating agencies, it had no longer been a science as to how securities and entities were being rated.

  • basically, rating companies were losing their grip on how to rate. Instead of rating a company on a basis of performance, analyst at S&P and Moody’s met financial quotas and had little oversight
