Project #53612 - Los Angeles

Ulin, David L., Ed. Writing Los Angeles, a literary anthology
New York, NY: Library of America, 2002

What is the quality of light in Los Angeles? Is it atomic? Neon? Starlight? Considering traffic and the amount of time an Angeleno can spend in a car, perhaps the light of Los Angeles is the lonely light of the dashboard or the cooperation-demanding glow of traffic lights. Depending on your experience with the police, the light in Los Angeles might be the flashing blue and red of the LAPD. If you're in "the industry" it might be floodlights or hotlights covered by gels... Is there one quality of Los Angeles light that shines for all of its residents?

Before you begin the paper, it will be useful to review the sections offered by the Purdue OWL (see Webliography under MLA Guidelines) that pertain to planning and composing an essay. Not every word will be relevant for this particular analytic paper, but the strategies offered will prove valuable. Look particularly to the sections titled "Writing About Fiction" and "Writing About Literature."

Paper Topic: After you finish reading this unit's assigned sections of Writing Los Angeles, I'd like you write an essay about your perceptions of the quality of light in Los Angeles, comparing or contrasting that opinion to at least one of those presented in the readings. That is, in a paper of 2-3 pages, offer a close discussion of your sense of the light of Los Angeles and contrast that to the one(s) presented in one or more of this week's reading selections. Give careful consideration to what the reading(s) suggest about how the light in Los Angeles is perceived to impact its residents. Be sure to include examples from at least one of the selections we have read this unit and in a well-argued presentation, discuss how the evidence you present adds up to the conclusion you have reached. Remember to do this without using the first-person perspective!

The purpose of this paper is for you to demonstrate your ability to read through the material, gather information and ideas, and use those to formulate ideas of your own. Critical thinking and analysis is about the ability to see beyond the surface of things, this paper asks that you deduce something about the character of Los Angeles and then describe the basis of your deduction by discussing the carefully selected passages from the readings that support, or perhaps disagree with, your insights. Your deduction, that is, your opinion, is the THESIS STATEMENT. We have a (mandatory) thread devoted to the development of your thesis statement this unit.

Structurally, your paper should have an introductory paragraph that concludes with a thesis statement - the assertion of the point of your paper. The body of the paper should consist of a close, careful discussion of passages from the reading selection(s) that you briefly quote and then analyze to show how they support, or even disagree with, your assertion. The concluding paragraph should bring together all the points made in the body of the paper and offer a reassertion of the thesis statement.

Though you are not required to use any outside sources for this paper, if you choose to use any, be sure to cite them properly. Use the Writer's Reference link provided in the Webliography to understand how to properly formatted a Works Cited page according to MLA Guidelines. Papers should be double-spaced, have a meaningful title, and include your name on the first page.
