Project #53672 - Community Corrections

As the newly appointed Director of Corrections, you have been tasked with addressing the costly prison-overcrowding situation, particularly since the prison has seen a significant increase in the sentencing of less-serious misdemeanant offenders to prison.

Your first task is to go before the judiciary (judges), district attorney, and chief public defender.  (1) Develop an argument for the increased use of community corrections.  Be prepared for resistance by some of the judiciary and of course, the district attorney who will likely oppose the idea.  Be truthful. Since you are an educated professional, (2) Describe what does NOT work to reduce recidivism in offender populations AND (3) what factors are important for parole and probation agencies to consider in order to achieve meaningful reductions in recidivism?  Lastly, (4) List FIVE possible sentencing recommendations that can be made and explain how these proposed recommendations can reduce prison overcrowding, while still maintaining the safety and security of the community.
