‘Explain the methods and purpose of liberative hermeneutics.’ (i.e. How do Liberation Theologians go about interpreting the Bible and why do they do it in this way?)

General guidance:

Read the question carefully. There are two parts to it. How (methods) and why (purpose)

You should have a paragraph on each of the following but not necessarily in this order!

o   Key themes and stories (Exodus, Amos, Jesus’ message etc). Use examples and explain how/why they are used by Liberation theologians. There are lots so this might take up more than one paragraph.

o   Hermeneutic circle. What is it? How does it work? Why do it? (Hint, it is about making the Bible RELEVANT.

o   Hermeneutic suspicion. What is it? Why use it? Give examples of ‘self-serving’ interpretations of Biblical stories.

o   Who does the interpretation? Why? Who is theology for? What is wrong with academics in universities doing it?

You might want to begin with a little bit about the traditional way of interpreting the Bible and why Liberation Theologians try to develop something different.

         Signpost your essay.

o   Introduction might include a line that says something like ‘There are x number of different methods that liberation theologians use when interpreting the Bible and one main purpose which is…’

o   Paragraph topic sentence could go something like this:

§  ‘The first element of liberative hermeneutics is the use of the hermeneutic of suspicion’.

o   Or

§  ‘Before we look at the methods used within liberative hermeneutics it is important to establish what the purpose of it is. The primary purpose of liberative hermeneutics is….’

§  Think about how you link between paragraphs too. For example, you might conclude a paragraph on the theme of land in the Exodus story by saying ‘The Exodus story provides a good example of a key element of liberative hermeneutics; the hermeneutic circle.’ You could then move on to a paragraph about the hermeneutic circle.
