Project #55392 - Quarantine

Case Study 1:  Your Case Study 1 assignment:

1)      First, select two of the following Communicable Diseases: Cholera, Diphtheria, Infectious Tuberculosis, Plague, Smallpox, Yellow Fever, or one of the Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (Lassa, Marburg, or Ebola).

2)      Using your Control of Communicable Disease Manual, complete the following table for each disease you select (do so in a concise manner).  Then, discuss the key similarities and differences in the elements between the two diseases.

Elements

Disease A

Disease B

Identification

Infectious Agents

Occurrence

Reservoir

Modes of Transmission

Incubation Period

Period of Communicability

Susceptibility

3)      Based on the key differences/similarities in disease elements identified in above section, compare and contrast Methods for Control to include: Preventive Measures, Control of Patient, Contacts and the Immediate Environment, Epidemic Measures, Disaster Implications, and International Measures. (Refer to your Heymann text).

4)      Explain how infectivity (secondary attack rate) and virulence (case fatality rate) of each disease might impact control measures.  Is one more virulent than the other and why is that important?

5)      Identify recent surveillance data on the two diseases and present the most recent morbidity and mortality data for each.  If possible, compare and contrast temporal and geographic patterns and explain the reasons for these observed differences.

6)      Discuss under what circumstances isolation or quarantine measures might be required.

Case Study 1 Requirements:

YOU MUST USE THE CASE STUDY 1 PAPER TEMPLATE PROVIDED.  Your paper must be at least 8 pages and include: title page, abstract, introduction, a body in which all items above are addressed, a well-defined conclusion, and reference page.  Your paper must include at least 5 scholarly references (no Wikipedia!).  References should be scholarly articles, CDC or WHO reports, etc.  Avoid use of secondary sources like non-scholarly websites or textbooks (although you will need to use your Communicable Diseases Manual for certain parts of the assignment).  If you include a graph or figure for the section on surveillance data, make sure it is properly cited per APA.  The paper must be typed, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins in 12-point Times New Roman font with all references properly cited.  Your paper must include the following:

Title Page

Abstract

Introduction

Section on Disease Elements (to cover items in #2 above)

Section on Methods of Control; Biological Characteristics (to cover items #3 and #4 above)

Section on Surveillance Data (to cover items in #5 above)

Section on Isolation and Quarantine  (to cover item in #6 above)

Conclusions (summarize your conclusions)

References

(create sub-headers under sections as needed to organize your paper and to ensure that you address all items above)

Your Case Study (and all assignments) must follow American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines for reference and bibliographic citation. Case Study 1

Introduction

[Indent each new paragraph using ½” tab indent.  Two spaces between sentences like so.

Include an introductory paragraph.]

Disease Elements [section header]

[The body of your paper goes here. Each major section header is already included, and you should add appropriate sub-headers (APA level 2 header) in each section as appropriate to help guide the reader and organize your paper (see Case Study 1 Instructions).  The header above is an APA level 1 header.  Remember the importance of properly citing your sources.  Paraphrase information (put the information into your own words, do not cut and paste) and then credit the author (Author, Year).  If you use a direct quote from a source, you must enclose it in quotation marks like so, “this is what a direct quote should look like and it must include a page or paragraph number in the citation like so” (Author, Year, p.).  Note that if there is no page number, identify the paragraph number and use the citation (Author, Year, para).  Another way to cite a source is to state the author and year within the sentence like so:  Smith (2002) showed that students are able to write per APA format.]

In this section you will:

1)      Select two of the following Communicable Diseases: Cholera, Diphtheria, Infectious Tuberculosis, Plague, Smallpox, Yellow Fever, or one of the Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (Lassa, Marburg, or Ebola).

2)      Using your Control of Communicable Disease Manual, complete the following table for each disease you select (do so in a concise manner).

Note: Keep table info short/concise.  Then, after completing the table, be sure to include a brief discussion on the KEY similarities and differences of the disease elements.
