Project #55767 - Measuring the Success of Off-Page Optimization

To determine the number of inbound links to a Web site, you can use two popular methods: (1) the Google Advanced Search Operator "link:" and (2) Alexa's traffic rankings. The following instructions will walk you through using these techniques:

Click Google (Links to an external site.) and type link: immediately followed by the URL (Web address) of a popular site (e.g., link:www.yahoo.com) in the search field and click the Google Search button. This will display the prominent inbound links to the site. Be sure to record the number of the number of results (inbound links) for the chosen Web site.

TRICK: To force Google to show you ALL the inbound links to a site, you can type the URL in the Google search field and insert a plus sign (+) in front of it (e.g., +www.yahoo.com). This is an undocumented "hack" that can be useful for finding obscure inbound links, but the Google link: operator is the preferred method for this activity because it shows the quality inbound links.

Click Alexa (Links to an external site.)then type the Web site address in the Search Alexa text box and click the Search button. Look at the Alexa Traffic Rank in US number. "The rank by country is calculated using a combination of average daily visitors and page views from users from that country over the past 3 months. The site with the highest combination of visitors and page views is ranked #1 in that country." For example, Yahoo! has an Alexa Traffic Rank in US of 3, which is incredible! Can you guess who holds the number one traffic position on Alexa? No surprise, Google. Although Alexa only measures people using its toolbar when browsing the Web, the number of such surfers is sufficiently large to make it a good way to estimate the traffic to a site.Be sure to record the number of the number of results (inbound links) for the chosen Web site.

TIP: Another useful inbound link analysis tool is the Open Site Explorer (Links to an external site.), which predicts a page or domain's ranking in search engine results based on their respective "Authority" ratings.

Repeat the steps above for a less popular site (--you can use your own).

Describe why you think these two sites have a high and low number of inbound links in terms of off-page optimization (a minimum of 300 words). In other words, what are these sites doing right and wrong with off-page optimization?
