Project #56397 - Short Writing

Paper 1

Short Writing Assignment: Paraphrasing Nonfiction

500 words minimum, discuss two selections from our Norton reader minimum, be sure to paraphrase the selections, the rest is up to you...However...What I would like to see is you to write nonfiction about fiction--that is, to pick two examples from our textbook, of your own choice, and then paraphrase, summarize, describe and analyze some aspect that the two have in common, in order to provide an insight. The easiest way to do this, I think, would be a compare/contrast essay. For example, you could compare and contrast "the twist" in Poe's Cask of Amontillado with "the twist" in Chekhov's "Lady with a Dog," explaining similarities and differences. Or, you could pick another aspect for analysis. That is, the nonfiction writing is YOUR writing--about fiction found in our Norton reader, to show off your skills as well as your originality. In my opinion, an "A" paper is one where the instructor learns something from the student, so please keep that in mind. Tell me something I didn't know before I read your paper, as well as demonstrating that you have read and can apply the material in this course. I hope this helps make it clearer and easier for you to write your first assignment. I'd like you to share them with the class and will add a discussion board for uploads in the discussion section for week 2. So, in addition to submitting it to me, please share it with your classmates, so we can learn what you have discovered. Thank you.

Short Writing Assignment: Describing a Poem

In your 2nd short writing QUOTE something, CITE something, and DOCUMENT something (that you have paraphrased, summarized, or described) to make your point…500 word max. (sources from our Norton reader, please). For example, read Alexander Pope's Essay on Criticism, and apply it to the analysis of a poem-- we have an excerpt ("Sound and Sense") in our Norton reader, and the entire poem, written in 1709, published in 1711, is online. So, here's a link: http://poetry.eserver.org/essay-on-criticism.html And here's the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Essay_on_Criticism
