Team Member A

I think the problem presented int his article is that not enough managers, or HR personnel, know how to let a person go from their employment effectively. They sometimes don't realize the impact it has on the other employees' morale. Also, that sometimes companies don't take a closer look to make sure downsizing will be the answer to cutting costs like they think it will. I think these are the problems because of how the article talks about managers needing to know how to prepare for crying or hostility. It also states there is a 50-50 chance that downsizing will result in benefits that the company anticipated. Possible solutions are transferring staff to other departments or cutting wages. If layoffs are necessary, the company needs to make sure they are following what the law states, providing severance packages to employees based on the tenure with the company. It is important that the employee that is being laid off is treated with respect and not like commodities.

Team member B:As Colleen Coates states " Every HR person or manager should be let go in their lifetime so they know what it feels like."  I think this statement holds tremendous merit because the best lessons in life are learned through personal experiences.  In order to properly communicate life changing messages of sorts, it should be done by a seasoned manager.  I will be very surprise if any company has a potential layoff learning path that will actually coach and train the management staff for these financial disasters.   It is very important to be sensitive to the individual being laid off as this will impact their livelihood significantly.  I definitely agree that others options must be explored such as relocating or wage cuts before making the decision to layoff.  While I don't know how cost effective it is for GE to offer severance pay for all qualifying employees.  I do agree that  GE has a financial responsibility to their loyal employees for years of service.
