Please build a thread around these topics: Answer in a couple of sentences : 1. We've looked at the role of capitalism in furthering (and squashing) LGBTQ experience. Now for this week we are looking at what happens when mainstream advertising embraces LGBTQ imagery starting in the 1990's. What are the possible results? 2. What are the "safe" LGBTQ elements that advertising has embraced? If lesbians are depicted, what kind of lesbians? How are gay men shown? 3. Why is the bulk of LGBTQ imagery homoerotic? Please think of a variety of reasons – cynical and not – why the male starts to be explored in mainstream advertising, starts to achieve an unprecedented sex symbol status. To what degree is this exploration radical? Queer? To what degree does it target straight women? To what degree does it assume a queer interest in mainstream male audience? To what degree is it a clever business strategy? 4. Make sure you understand the term "appropriation;" comment on advertising's appropriation of LGBTQ codes. How does this make you feel? Are you happy with it? Angry about it? Or? Tell why.
