The first unit we will complete for this course is based on Chapters 15 & 16 on maritime expansion in the Atlantic and Afro Eurasian worlds. The Columbian Exchange, as the events surrounding the fifty or so years subsequent to Columbus's travels are known, have had a huge impact on the history of the world in the past several centuries. Certainly people had traveled from Eurasia to the Americas before, but the combined impact of the burgeoning commercial of Europe with north Africa and Asia in this period, along with the information revolution of movable type as well as the military evolution of the introduction of gunpowder, both from China, combined to intensify the resulting interest in what Europeans called the New World. Below is a page from a book titled Imago Mundi (Image of the World), a widely read geography that Columbus consulted and annotated before his trip. Columbus relied as much on books as on his nautical expertise.
