Mood Disorders:

Mark is more prone to a mood disorder due to his stage in life, particularly major depressive disorder, as evidenced by his continued tardiness, feelings of worthlessness, and disinterest in life. This is further confirmed by his loss of weight, and the fact that his symptoms have lasted over a period of several months. Other than the evident symptoms, there is a need to obtain the patient’s life history, particularly the immediate history preceding the symptoms.

The mood disorders are often caused by an imbalance in neurotransmitters, certain medical conditions, life events, and substance abuse amongst other causes. As such, treating either individual will be dependent upon the primary cause of the mood disorder. In particular, treatments with medication can at times result in withdrawal symptoms, and overdependence on these medications (Levin, 2009). Adequate research must, therefore, be carried out in order to effectively identify the etiology of the given mood disorder, as well as the best approach to treatment. According to Levin (2009), identifying the life stage has a significant impact on determining the causal factors for the mood disorder, as well as in shaping the treatment strategy. For instance, in Jeff’s case, behavioral therapy may be a more effective approach towards management, while for Mark, cognitive therapy and medication may be more efficient. These differences are primarily due to the fact that they are at different stages in life.

Instructors Question:

Thanks for addressing the life stage aspect of this question, Jason!
The recommended treatment in relationship to this topic seem relevant and reasonable, as well as the potential diagnosis for Mark.  What are the required criteria for the diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder, per DSM-5, and how many of Mark's symptoms fit this criteria?
Also, for Jeff to receive behavioral therapy, a diagnosis is typically necessary for the record and medical claims. What diagnosis could be used?

Dr. Steckal
