1.The major events that shaped colonial resistance to taxation were: The Stamp Act of 1765, Townshend Acts and the Boston Tea Party. The colonial resistance started when the British attempted to “impose higher taxes” and “tighter imperial controls” after the French and Indian War (Kennedy). However, for the British they thought it was fair that they raise taxes because they felt that the colonists should bear their fair share of the costs of the empire. But, for the colonists this act by the British was measured as “constituted attacks on fundamental rights” (Kennedy).  Through well-organized strategy and boycotts, the colonists forced “repeal of the Stamp Act of 1765 as well as the Townshend Acts” (Kennedy). The colonists formed the Boston Tea Party which in December 1773. This move was to enforce a “law that they would refuse to benefit the British East India Company monopoly” (Kennedy). The British responded to the Tea Party, by imposing harsh Intolerable Acts, and Quebec Act, “which roused deep fears of religious as well as political tyranny” (Kennedy). The actions of the British caused a stir in the Americans which led to them calling the First Continental Congress in September 1774 and the clash of arms at Lexington and Concord in April 1775. Both sides went to war with the British having the advantage of a “larger population, a professionally trained army, and a much greater economic strength” (Kennedy). Whereas, the Americans had an advantage of “territory and leadership, but, there greatest asset was that they were ready to sacrifice everything for their rights” (Kennedy).

I believe that taxation today is very immoral because it compels some individuals to purchase government services which they do not desire.  For example, many citizens who do not drive, have no choice but to help contribute to the costs of our highway network. Also, taxation requires us to purchase services we do not want. I feel that the American people should have a choice of where their money goes and not have money put into things that they do not use.

Lastly, one tax that I feel is unnecessary is highway taxes. My reason for saying this is because why are we paying for something that we are not seeing results for in some states. I live in California presently and there are pot holes everywhere which put wear-n-tear on your vehicle. If I’m going to be paying into something I feel that I should see results. I think it gets ridiculous at times, some potholes are inevitable and you are bound to hit one every now and then.

2.The problem with taxation began in 1773 when Parliament gave free tax status and free tax transport of tea to the British East India Company. This meant that colonial tea traders could not compete with this tea company. The East India Company could charge a lower price and still make a profit. But colonist couldn’t compete they had to place a higher price on their product due to being taxed. This triggered a revolt in the colonies. (Kennedy) On December 16, 1773 the colonist disguised as Indians Boarded East India ships and threw crates or bales of tea into Boston Harbor. This came to be known as the Boston Tea Party.  In 1764 Parliament also enacted the Sugar Act in an attempt to raise money through a tax on Molasses. Then in 1765 Parliament enacted the Stamp Act. (Kennedy) This placed a tax on all paper and paper products; from playing card to official documents. Their rally cries was “taxation without representation is not fair” and still holds true today.

In my opinion the Gas tax is the highest here in California than any other states in the nation. When every other state is paying 1.89-2.00 per gallon we here in California are still paying 2.39-2.69 per gallon we need some balance here, but environmentalist say that the higher taxes go to pay for clean air, clean water, and saves our environment. That’s well and good but other states have the same environment and National Parks as we do so what’s the problem.(Government)

What is my thoughts about taxes today? We diffidently need reform in this area. We have the middle class fitting the bill for everything. We need the 1-2%ers take more responsibility in paying their share of the taxes. It seems to me the middle class is taking the brunt of the problem; by paying every government program that comes along. This is done by raising the taxes on the middle class. Theses tax problems will never go away unless we elect better people to represent us in the House of Representatives and in the Senate. These people have to have the peoples interest in mind not their own agendas or the agendas of hobbyist or big business.

3.There are numerous reasons the colonists resisted paying taxes to the British Crown. The first reason was the end of the 7 Years War. Many colonists believed they did not need the British troops stationed in the New World because there was no threat to the Colonists from the French or Indians. Moreover, the colonists believed they could be more independent. However, the English seen things the other way around.

The English believed all the money they spent protecting the Colonists should be repaid. Therefore, the English began to tax the colonists. The English began with the Sugar Act of 1764 which taxes sweeteners such as molasses. The English also passed the Stamp Act of 1765 with taxed for a stamp on any goods such as foods or even stamps on cards and notes.

The Colonists found the taxes to be intrusive and they believed they were being ruled by tyrants who didn't even live where they were. So colonists began to rebel and refused to pay taxes. Moreover, colonists attacked tax collectors and even tarred and feathers tax collectors. In response to the colonists uprisings the English repealed the Stamp act and passed the Declaratory Act of 1766 which placed Parliament supreme over the colonists. The result was the English slowly increasing their grip over the colonists which would lead towards revolution.

My thoughts on taxation are that taxes are necessary. However, I believe that an Internet tax is unnecessary. For when people shop on the Internet their goods come from many places. Moreover, people already have to pay for shipping and waiting to receive their orders. I believe that Internet taxes are more of nuisances than helpful.
