Project #60036 - Human Resouce

As the third generation in command, Ms Julie J. proved herself to be a visionary who deeply cares about the company and the jamu industry. Julie J. spent most of her education years in Singapore, pursued her university education in America and graduated from Purdue University in Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Ms Julie J. adopted the Singapore citizenship status.

She develops a synergy where academics, professionals, business people, the government and all parties work jointly to realize a conducive and profitable business environment for SpicyHerb organisation.

Ms Julie J. expands the business into Western medicine for another segment of customers. In SpicyHerb organisation’s diverse skilled and semi-skilled workforce is managed with Western wisdom and Eastern values.

Below is the dialogue between Ms Julie J., 3rd generation owner of SpicyHerb and Mr Zarah, Senior Manager, Human Resources and Administration.

Ms Julie J.: When my father Hans R. passed away suddenly due to heart attack, there was no succession plan in the organisation.

My main concern was “Am I the right fit for the job?” Will the employees accept a female boss?

Mr Zarah: Can you share with us what do you mean by “right fit”?

Ms Julie J.: Well, there is need to ensure there is person-job fit and person-organisation fit. Succession planning needs to ensure the candidate has the personality to fit the job scope as well as the organisation culture.

As my father’s only child, I assured the family that I will expand the family business with innovative ways. I will manage human resources using equal employment practices.

Mr Zarah: Can you share with us in more detailed explanation on how the above issues facilitated the organisation’s expansion into Europe and America?

Ms Julie J.: Currently, our products are sold in Philippines, Korea, the Netherlands, Taiwan, New Zealand, Sweden and the United States. Recently, we partnered with a Taiwanese company to include in the multilevel marketing route.

In 1986, the company employed over 1000 employees and by 1991, it rose to almost 2000 employees. There is a need to close the gap between management and the workers, so the company began giving awards for excellent achievement, organising staff training programmes, listened to employees suggestions and devised ways to upgrade their general welfare.

Mr Zarah: As the 3rd generation owner that belongs to the Generation Y, will you consider talent management initiatives and career development programmes be confined to only your immediate family members?

Ms Julie J.: Talent management in SpicyHerb organisation adopts a goal-oriented and integrated process of planning, recruiting, developing, managing and compensating all employees in the organisation. Succession planning does not confine to family members but rather, the best fit.

SpicyHerb’s headoffice is based in Singapore with diverse talents everywhere. As the manufacturing plants are in Indonesia, the research and development team members are from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, China and India.

The marketing team that covers Europe and America are from the Western region as they understand the market. Many experienced workers from baby-boomers generation and generation X are employed for their vast experiences in the herbal medicine business. Women and handicapped employees are employed in our organisation in job scopes that fit their ability. Professionals, managers and executives with intellectual capability are provided career development opportunities to lead teams, both locally and overseas.

Link each answer to the facts given in the above notes, situation, excerpts.
