Project #60127 - Bio 175 words disscus and two 75 words reply

If brown eyes are dominant to blue eyes, can two blue eye parents have a brown eyed child?  Please explain your answer using the information from this week’s lectures.Make sure you include definitions of genotype, phenotypes, dominant, and recessive.  Also please show how you came to your results by using a monohybrid punnett square.(175 words)

1. It is very possible for both parents to have blue eyes and produce a brown eyed child. However, in order for this to occur, it would be necessary for one of the parents to possess the dominant gene for brown eyes.  This is because dominant alleles are incredibly common, and when a recessive trait is seen, it is because the only the dominant alleles are not present to mask the recessive alleles. According to the Punnett Square laid out below, if one parent contains one dominant gene for brown eyes and one recessive gene for blue eyes, there will be a 50/50 chance for any child they conceive to have either blue or brown eyes.

b          Bb       bb

This "Graph" concludes that it is possible for two brown eyed people to have a child with blue eyes. This assumes that any of four combinations of the two genes is possible.  This is true for genes that are far apart or on different chromosomes.

2.It is very possible for both parents to have blue eyes and produce a brown eyed child. Either parent needs to have the brown eye trait, but did not get brown eyes from it (Bb). Therefore, when the parents produce, it will be clear that one of the parents had the brown eyed trait to pass on to its child.

Definitions

Genotype- the genetic makeup of an individual
Phenotype- what the genes look like or how they are physically expressed
Dominant- alleles will always mask the other genes (i.e. Black hair)
Recessive- the alleles that are masked, if a dominant allele is present (i.e. blond hair)

  B b
b Bb bb
b Bb

Key:

B= Brown trait

b= blue trait
