Project #6018 - Independent South Asia (1947-2013)

Readings mentioned in each question will be shared with you.

1) After the question of Indian national independence was settled in 1947, the questions of national and social development became central.  Select any one issue of Indian national or social development (e.g., Reservations/compensatory discrimination, the condition of women, economic development, economic inequities, micro-credit).  Discuss the ways (be specific) that people in the post-Independence Republic of India dealt with this one issue.  Be sure to use specific evidence to support your overall thesis.

2) Since independence, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have each developed in a different way.  Compare and contrast any two of these nations in terms of the ways it developed since independence.  Be sure to use specific evidence to support your overall thesis.

3a) We have read a number of sources by and/or about the ideal social order  in the “new nations” of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.  Select any two sources and compare and contrast their image of proper society in South Asia: what it is and what it should be.  Be sure to use specific evidence to support your overall thesis.

3b) In the years prior and then subsequent to independence, different people advanced different political models for “new nations” of India, Pakistan, and (later) Bangladesh.  1) Select one source we have read or seen each for any two of these nations (for a total of two sources) and 2) compare and contrast these two political models. Be sure to use specific evidence to support your overall thesis.

4) We have looked at sources using a variety of genres (including speeches, fiction, social science, film, autobiography, and poetry).  1) From this section of the course, select one source each from any two different genres (for a total of two sources) and 2) compare and contrast the ways that that genre affects the author's argument.  Be sure to use specific evidence to support your overall thesis.

5) What role has identity (religious, regional, economic, and/or gendered) played in the creation of any two of the new nations of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh? Be sure to use specific evidence to support your overall thesis.
