In Robert A. Trennert’s essay, “Educating Indian Girls at Nonreservation Boarding Schools,” Trennert explains how the education that the Indian girls received at these schools were not academics but emphasized domestic and vocational education. Trennert exemplifies how under the guidance of General Armstrong and Captain Pratt at Carlisle, “…the girls were placed in a system that put maximum emphasis on domestic chores. Academic learning clearly played a subordinate role. The girls spent no more than half a day in the classroom and devoted the rest of their time to domestic work.” Trennert illustrates how academics were not a priority in the education for Indian girls. Trennert also explains how domestic work takes up a majority of the girls’ day and how academic work did not compare to the amount of time they spend on cleaning, sewing, and laundry. Even though Trennert explains how Pratt’s enthusiasm included a mother and daughter in his recruitment for more students, other agencies did not feel the same way and blocked recruitment because they did not believe in admitting girls to a black school. Furthermore, Trennert illustrates how most of the academics that the Indian girls did learn were focused on the English language and household skills. Trennert also exemplifies how, “The small number of girls… made it difficult to implement a general educational plan.” Therefore, household skills were more of a priority compared to general academics.

Indian women need more academic education compared to domestic and vocational education. An Indian woman having a wide range of skill will lead to a more successful life compared to one with just domestic and vocational education because they will have more opportunities such as better careers for them. An education filled with other subjects will help create a better future for the Indian women who were once entitled to only be educated in domestic and vocational education. Moreover, having housekeeping skills will not bring in as much income compared to a woman with more skills and an educated background. Opportunities like being able to learn more than just domestic skills will create more accomplishments within society.
