Project #61294 - Hydraulic fracturing (fracking)

1) Hydraulic fracturing (fracking), is a technique in which rock is fractured by
hydraulically pressurized liquid made of water, sand, and chemicals. This process has been a major point of contention between environmentalists and energy/industry officials. While environmentalists are concerned about the impact that the process has on the environment, the demand for additional hydrocarbon reserves is ever increasing.

  1. a)  Write a research paper (4-5 pages minimum excluding the reference page, double spaced, typed, times new roman, 12pt font) discussing the economic benefits of hydraulic fracturing in the United States. Please report on the regions where the process is more common (give statistics, site your sources).

  2. b)  Explain how the process is conducted (chemicals used, other resources for example land area, other natural habitat) and the output (e.g. number of barrels/quantity of natural gas obtained per unit area)

  3. c)  Present an argument about the importance of the process.

  4. d)  Conversely, explain the environmental impact that hydraulic fracturing has had on the ecosystem (community of living organisms [plants, animals and microbes] in conjunction with the nonliving components of the environment (soil, air, water), interacting as a system) or the potential that the process may have if allowed to go unmonitored.
