Project #61742 - Russian

We began to talk about two sets of opposing concepts: "old" vs. "new" and "East" vs. "West." Neither of these pairs are one dimensional. While Russians have often formed opposing camps based on these divisions, we will quickly discover that each opposition can be given both   positive and negative values, and oftentimes even mask very remarkable similarities between groups.  Please think about both positive and negative values that we tend to attach to each side of that pair: for example, "old" is often equated with "traditional," and traditions can be viewed as positive or negative. I'd also like you to choose at least ONE Russian concept that could reflect the tension between these opposing pairs, then discuss them  (for example, defining the Mongols as "Eastern," viewing the "Western" Orthodox church as a betrayal of the true Orthodoxy; considering the Old Believers as the true defenders of the "old," traditional ways, etc.). Analyze the following expressions in contexts: old / new house, old/ new friend, old/ new car, old / new shoes, new concept, new (and improved)…., new baby, etc.
