I want my essay to be revised according to the following guidelines by my TA. I am providing you with the necessary slides to answer these prompts.
The response to the first prompt is somewhat confused. Tell me clearly why the memory view as first set forth is circular. Tell me how Cohen attempts to break the circle by revising the meaning of "genuine memory." Tell me whether he succeeds or not (I suggest you answer that, no, he does not succeed, because of the issue raised by the "duplication problem.")
The response to the third prompt is more problematic. Your first paragraph is ok, but you don't tell me the three conditions for a reasonable fear. Read the lecture slides. Read the text. Then you'll find them. Once you've identified the three conditions, then you'll be in a position to make sense of the four aspects of death and why Kagan thinks it isn't reasonable to fear each of them.
Prompts for the essay (Page Limit: 2 pages, MLA formatting)
(1) In John Perry's A Dialogue on Personal Identity and Immortality, Gretchen Weirob challenges Dave Cohen to find a way to "break out of the circle of using real memory to explain identity, and identity to mark the difference between real and apparent memory" (p. 30). First explain how, according to Gretchen, the memory view of personal identity is circular. Then explain how Cohen attempts to break out of the circle Gretchen has described. Do you think he is successful? Why or why not?
(3) Kagan thinks that death can be, and very often is, bad for the person who dies (and this is so because death deprives that person of the goods of life). But Kagan denies that it is reasonable or appropriate to fear death. Explain as clearly as you can his view. What are the conditions he places on reasonable or appropriate fear? What are the different things he thinks we might fear in fearing death? And why does he think it isn't reasonable or appropriate to fear any of these things?
P.S. I have already been dissapointed by a very unique writer so please only bid if you are aware of the subject really well. Most of my grade depends on this one essay
