In this assignment you are to highlight a debate within sociological theory concerning one of/or multiple theorists covered in this course. You must take a position on the issue and support it with evidence. Please note that empirical evidence may not include non-academic websites (including wikipedia).

You are encouraged to seek out secondary sources to help you refine your understandings of the topic and to serve as a source of evidence for the position you take. I recommend at least one unique source per page of writing.

Please also note that the main subject matter of this paper is theory. This means that you should seek to highlight the theoretical core of the argument that you are analyzing and explain your position in terms of that theoretical core.

Potential routes for your papers include: comparing and contrasting two theorists on a particular topic and explaining who you find more convincing; scrutinizing a theory in light of empirical examples.

Topic/questions you may answer: What are social norms and how do they influence social action?

Based on the Readings:

Max Weber #3: Social Action

Reading: “Basic Sociological Terms”

Max Weber #4: Power, Domination, and Inequality

Reading: “The Distribution of Power Within the Political Community:
Class, Status, Party”

Mass Theorists: Mosca, Pareto, Michels

Reading: “The Circulation of Elites"

Georg Simmel #1: Social Life in Modern Society

Reading: “The Metropolis and Mental Life”

Plagiarism is a serious academic offence. You are responsible to correctly cite AND reference all sources that you consult in the formation or your ideas and your writing. Please refer to the course syllabus for more details regarding plagiarism.
