Project #63090 - master level

2000 word

·         Task Description:
The text analyses task requires students to identify and explain 5 differing perspectives of children and childhood using a carefully chosen artefact to illustrate each one. The five (5) artefacts  are to be derived from a range of multimodal texts (e.g. popular culture, media, advertisements, story books, videos). This analysis is to be supported by pertinent literature and relate to diverse cultural viewpoints.

Criteria & Marking:
This assessment item requires students to demonstrate they can:

1.        identify and explain five differing representations of children and childhood illustrated by five artefacts;

2.        analyse the representations of children and childhood (illustrated by each artefact) using theoretical perspectives to support, and considering cultural views;

3.        critically reflect on their own beliefs and practices in relation to the theoretical perspectives; and

4.        discuss the role of adults  in supporting the development of positive children’s identities in relation to the differing representations of children and childhood;

5.        use appropriate level of literacy and APA 6th referencing.

Critical Analysis

Criteria 2 and 3 involve critical analysis. Critical analysis is subjective writing because it expresses the writer's opinion or evaluation of a text, concept or theory. When we think critically we are being active; we are not passively accepting everything we read and hear, but questioning, evaluating, making judgements, finding connections and categorising. It means being open to other points of view and not being blinded by our own biases.
Asking questions - and then answering them - is central for critical analysis. The following questions may help you to judge the validity of the various perceptions presented in the course readings

·         How does this relate to what I believe? Why?

·

§  Is this new knowledge for me? or did I already know this?

§  Does it apply to my context? Does it have meaning in my context?

§  Think about how my knowledge of these perspectives might influence my teaching. What plans do I need to make?
