Project #63236 - historical thinking essay

Choose an event or development discussed in chapters 20 or 21 of Patterns in World History that interests you. In five paragraphs:

  1. Summarize the event or development in your own words
  2. Explain its historical context
  3. Discuss the most significant contingent factor(s) relating to it
  4. Reflect on its historical complexity
  5. Conclude by commenting on its significance for our world today.

Along with the textbook, use one relevant primary source (the Documents reader may be found here; useful East Asian sources may be found here (Links to an external site.) and here (Links to an external site.), and sources dealing with South Asia may be found here (Links to an external site.)) and a scholarly article (taken from a history journal in JSTOR (Links to an external site.)) in developing your essay. For those of you unfamiliar with JSTOR, I will post a video about using it (it will be part of the Wednesday, March 18 lecture video).

Your essay will be assessed (out of 100 points) on organization and the accuracy/relevance of your information and analysis, on the accurate use of relevant historical detail, and on how well you express an understanding of historical thinking in your analysis. Write clearly and concisely, and please watch for typos, and errors of spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Cite all information and ideas taken from other sources; citations and a list of works cited should follow either MLA parenthetical citation format or Chicago Manual of Style notes/bibliography format.

When citing the journal article, follow MLA  (Links to an external site.)format for an article in an online scholarly journal or Chicago (Links to an external site.) format for citing electronic journals.

The primary source essay is due on Canvas by the start of class Monday, March 23. If you are using Pages or Open Office to compose your essay, please submit your file as a Word file! After the essay has been graded, you will have an opportunity to revise it. If you choose to revise, your overall grade for the assignment will be an average of the two attempts.
