Project #63511 - psychology

ITS ONLY TWO PAGE ESSAY LONG.. PLEASE USE SIMPLE ENGLISH I AM AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT.

Psychology meets Popular Media

The second assignment will require you find and evaluate claims about psychology in the popular media (e.g., Metro, Cosmo, The Today Show). First, you should start by looking through your textbook and find a topic that is interesting to you. Next, you will then need to look through various types of media that relate to your topic (e.g., if you are interested in gender differences in depression, you may want to search for magazine articles that talk about depression in men and women).  You will eventually need to choose examples of claims made in the media within that topic about psychological concepts (e.g., engaging in exercise reduces depression, or men and women display equal rates of depression). Lastly, evaluate the claims made in the media and compare it to the information presented in your textbook and/or research articles.

You may present your findings in two ways: You can choose to write a short paper (2-3, double-spaced pages) or you can create a PowerPoint presentation. Regardless of the format, it should contain the following:

1)    Your examples of claims about psychology made in the media

2)    The textbook and/or research literature information that relates to these claims

3)    Your critical evaluation of the claims made by the media, based on the information in your textbook. In other words, does the claim by the media seem supported by the textbook/research literature? Does the media leave out important information when they are making claims?

Regardless of the format you choose, all text in your project should use APA format. Your project should contain a References list in APA format.

Suggested Outline

·      Introduce your chosen topic in a clear and concise manner.

·      How is the topic presented to the public through the popular media (e.g., are psychological disorders accurately depicted in film and television)? If you are examining media and news outlets, are the statements based on reliable scientific sources? Do they identify specific studies? If so, how accurate can we judge those studies to be (e.g., consider year of publication - if the study was published more than a decade ago, does it reflect contemporary research)?

·      Present the psychological research that relates to your topic.

·      What should be the lessons learned (e.g., consider the accuracy and fiction, science and pseudoscience in how psychology is portrayed).
