Project #64246 - Biology assignment - Mystery of the Dead Zone

Assignment question: (Please do not make it seem proffesional, I want a simple answer to the questions, and I want the answers showing the information from the research done).

I don't know why this bugs me the way it does, but it does.  After 3.8 billion years of evolution and life adapting to all possible circumstances like boiling acid springs, 190 degree, mostly dry rock surfaces in the desert, the surface of glaciers, why have no major (multicellular) forms of life colonized the transition between the marine and terrestrial zones?  If life originated in the oceans it had to make the leap to land through this zone, the "Dead Zone", which at apparently can not occupy?  Why not?

Some of the clues may be found in the transition from the intertidal to the upper intertidal/splash zone:

Using evidence and research develop an hypothesis that you could test in a few short trips to the intertidal that potentially explains the apparent "Dead Zone" be sure your ideas are unique to you. Briefly describe the methods you will use to test this hypothesis.
