Project #64359 - Summary/Response Paper

Summary/Response Essay

Composition I

Definition:  Each student will be writing a reflective/exploratory essay generated from the summarization of and response to a single source.  Assume that the audience for this piece is someone in the community who is not familiar with the opinion-issue addressed by the source and that the purpose in writing this essay is to:

Present the author’s point of view

Use the author’s point of view as a springboard to present your own ideas and point of view about the topic.

Procedure:

The first stop in completing this paper successfully will be to choose an article.  Choose your article and your topic carefully.

Step two involves reading the article again and again, carefully.  Identify the thesis (central point) of the article.

Complete a detailed, objective summary of the article probing the author’s views about the issue.  You will need to present the main point and supporting points of the original source without judging the issue.

Write your response or personal reactions to that article.  Examine the article’s worth, strengths and weaknesses, and your feelings.  It is a subjective response, not researched.

Questions to consider when responding to the article:

What did you agree with in the article?  Why?

What did you disagree with in the article?  Why

You can answer one depending on your personal reactions.

Organization:

The essay should be related in some logical and effective manner, including use of a well-defined thesis statement and use of clear transition markers and/or topic sentences.

Development:

Your essay should utilize enough description, definition, comparison, and/or illustration to make the audience understand your point of view and how it is unique from the original source essay and its point of view.

This paper should run between 2-4 pages, typed and double spaced. Correct usage, grammar, and mechanics are required.  As we work on this assignment we will be preparing for the position essay.  Avoid topics involving abortion, gun control, death penalty, or euthanasia.  Use Chapter 5 for ideas and a guide.
