Project #64525 - Freedom in a Civil Society

The Assignment: Americans pride themselves on living in the "land of the free." Yet, how much freedom do we (or should we) really have? Should we be free to hurt ourselves? To hurt others? To offend others? Where does my freedom to do what I want to stop, and your freedom not have to endure things you find immoral or distasteful begin?

For this paper, you should choose ONE of the following broad topics:

1) Freedom to say what you want (For example, Hate speech)

2) Freedom to hear/see/watch what you want (For example, pornography)

3) Freedom to consume what you want (For example, drugs)

Discuss your moral position on this issue. Explain where you stand in terms of (Harm Principle, Legal Paternalism, Legal Moralism, and Offense Principle). Give the strongest arguments you can in support of your view. Be as clear and detailed as you can. Also explain the strongest argument you can think of AGAINST your view, and explain how you respond to that counterargument.

** Outside research is not permitted, you must only write from your head and no sources. Write in your own words, using the terms stated above. please do not use any of the examples given, come up with a new example to write for this paper. This paper should only be 1,000 words. You need to appropriately use and explain moral terms, concepts and principles, your ability to give reasoned arguments in support of your view, and your ability to identify and respond to your arguments against your own view.**
