Project #65351 - Point of View

ASSIGNMENT: Write a 750-word essay on one of the prompts below. Even though your essay will be focused on a single feature of short fiction, it should suggest a new perspective on the entire text under consideration. To do this, push your thinking to a deeper understanding of one aspect of the text rather than attempting to write a surface-level summary of all the text's key points. Take risks. I am happy to discuss essay ideas and drafts by email. Get in touch.

1. Point of view: As we have seen, the point of view from which a story is told affects the story in crucial ways. We ask, "Why this point of view for this particular story?" Choose one of the stories we've read and discuss how its point of view relates to a specific function of gothic fiction or cultivates an important gothic effect that contributes to our understanding of the story's theme. Essay Outline: The introduction should identify the story under consideration, its author, the key gothic function or gothic effect in the story, and state specifically how the point of view addresses the gothic function or gothic effect. Body paragraphs should support your argument with specific references to the story, bolstered by relevant textual evidence (i.e. brief, selective direct quotations) and analysis of that evidence. Your conclusion should place your argument within a larger, meaningful context for your reader.

2. Symbol: We know that symbolism often contributes to larger thematic points. Choose a key symbol from one of the stories we've read and discuss how it supports an important gothic effect or theme in the story. Essay Outline: The introduction should identify the story under consideration, its author, the key gothic theme in the story, and state specifically how the symbol addresses that theme. Your conclusion should place your argument within a larger, meaningful context for your reader.

3. Setting: We have witnessed how setting is a key feature of gothic fiction. Choose a key setting from one of the stories we've read and discuss how it supports an important gothic effect or theme in the story. Essay OutlineThe introduction should identify the story under consideration, its author, the key gothic theme in the story, and state specifically how the setting addresses that theme. SOURCE CITATION: Your essay must properly cite the work under consideration and any research sources used. Correct source usage consists of two elements: (1) brief in-text citations for any idea or passage that is not your original idea; and (2) a properly formatted list of all Works Cited at the end of the essay. Your Writers Reference textbook contains sections on evaluating and using sources and avoiding plagiarism. Email me with any questions about allowable use.

FORMAT: The essay must conform to MLA standards: double-space, twelve-point font (Times New Roman or Courier), and one-inch margins on all pages. Your Writers Reference textbook contains sections on MLA format instructions and models.

DUE: The final draft of your essay must be submitted to the Essay #2 feature link in the Week 3 Assignments folder no later than midnight (CST) on Monday, April 6.
