Project #65969 - Exercise performance presentation

10-12 Slide show

In this exercise, you will place one or more of the assigned readings in direct conversation with a performance that comments upon, reacts to, or ensouls the reading topic in relation to contemporary queer circumstance. Students work individually or in teams of two to bring to the class a performance—live or mediated—that relates in some complex way to one or more of the reading assignments and class topics. For example, the team might screen a brief film clip,

YouTube video, television commercial, or music video and then respond; or a team might stage a live performance in the classroom. The team will contextualize the performance for the class and will suggest ways in which the reading(s) and the performance inform or challenge each other. The performance should not merely exemplify some point in the reading – there should be an interpretative component which advances our understanding in significant ways; nor should the performance be simply one that the assigned reading has already analyzed in depth. The performance should be of the now and new to the class, an expression of contemporary queer experience that can be seen to connect back to the reading topic. The performance and initial contextualizing remarks should run be 15 minutes total. Please do not exceed this limit. After the contextualizing comments and the performance, the team will facilitate class discussion of the issues raised in performance. Each student will complete one performance exercise. Start your engines early; identify a class partner and an issue you wish to address / interpret. Run your ideas by me via e-mail. Sign-ups for performance schedule begin in week two.
