Project #66575 - Development psychology

1.Culture is the lens through which children (and adults) view the world. Nieto (1992) argues that, despite the benefits of bilingual educational endeavors, students’ native language and culture are, at times, minimized or set aside in deference to English and the mainstream American culture from which our educational system functions. Although some may present such emphases as enhancing achievement and “for their own good,” what are the hidden messages that may be imparted to these same students by such school practices? Discuss the inadvertent but powerful cultural values that may be conveyed.

2.Someone tells you that he or she has analyzed his or her genetic background and environmental experiences and reached the conclusion that environment definitely has had little influence on his or her intelligence. What would you say to this person about his or her ability to make this self-diagnosed conclusion?
