Project #66919 - Des Psychology

1) Compare and contrast Freud’s perspective of personality development with that of Erikson. In your answer, identify and describe both Freud’s psychosexual stages and Erikson’s psychosocial stages, using examples to illustrate each stage.  You should be thoughtfully and critically comparing each theorists stage to one another, not just describing each theory in isolation.

2) Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s theories are both constructivist in outlook, since they both believe that children must construct their own understanding of the world, rather than just absorbing information. However, their theories are different both in structure and in application.  Compare and contrast Piaget's cognitive theory of development with Vygotsky's socio-cultural theory.  Consider how they are similar and different in their belief about the role of language, play, and brain maturation/cognitive development.  In your discussion of Piaget, illustrate how the child adapts to his or her environment (assimilation, accommodation, equilibration, etc.), the four stages of development, and a minimum of one goal the child attains before moving on to the next stage (i.e. object permanence).  For Vygotsky, be sure to discuss the zone of proximal development, scaffolding, and the role of apprenticeship.  Finally, how are these theories applied in the classroom?

3) How did Kohlberg research moral development? What are the three basic levels of his theory? What are some of the criticisms of Kohlberg's theory from a gender/cultural viewpoint?  Provide real-life examples to illustrate a child’s thinking.

4)  According to an Associated Press article on February 20, 1992, the issue of the effects of drugs on prenatal development arose after Jeffrey Dahmer, known as the "Milwaukee Cannibal," was sentenced to life imprisonment for 15 slayings. In brief, the claim was made that Dahmer's mother ingested four sedatives (meprobamate, mephobarbital, phenobarbital, and secobarbital) and the female sex hormone progestin one month after becoming pregnant. The article suggested that these drugs could have affected Dahmer and were somehow related to his slaying the victims, having sex with their corpses, and eating their flesh. Apply your knowledge about the scientific method by designing a study to determine the effects of prenatal effects of sedatives and hormones on personality development and behavior.

Clearly specify (a) What specific problem or question do you want to study? (b) What predictions would you make and test in your study? (c) What measures would you use (i.e., observation, interviews and questionnaires, case studies, standardized tests, physiological research, or multimeasure, multisource, and multicontext approach) and how would you define each measure clearly and unambiguously? (d) What strategy would you follow--experimental or correlational, and what would be the time span of your inquiry--cross sectional or longitudinal? (e) What ethical considerations must be addressed before you conduct your study?
