Sample Role-Play Scenario B You are a customer at a global food market you have shopped in for many years. A new hire at the store, who is from a different culture/co-culture than you, is assisting you today. Problem: Although you have explained what you are seeking several times, the associate continues to point you in the wrong direction and provide incorrect items. When you express this to him/her, he/she becomes upset and suggests you are being rude and demanding. Objective: Without alienating the representative, which might result in his/her no longer helping you, you try to convince him/her that his/her help is essential but his/her approach is inappropriate and is unappreciated. Without alienating the customer, which might result in him/her leaving the store without making a purchase, the clerk will want to convince the customer that he/she is capable of helping them find what is needed. *PLZ MAKE THE CONVERSATION AT LEAST 2-3 MINS FOR ME AND MY PARTNER AND MAKE IT REAL EASY SO WE CAN PRESENT IT NOT TOO WORDY, MAKE IT BASIC SO WE PRESENT IT EASY. Pre-Role-Play Paper 1. Utilizing the scenario in which the student will be the initiator, students are required to develop a three pages pre-role-play write-up. Specifically, students will use the facts presented in the scenario and information gathered during independent research to clearly and directly explain how each of the following skills might affect their ability, both positively and negatively, to interact with someone from a different culture/co-culture (country, region, religion, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation, high-context, low-context, collectivism, and/or individualism, etc.), during the role-play. A. Effective use of language B. Identity management C. Listening and responding D. Perception E. Empathy F. Interviewing (questioning with a specific purpose) G. Defensive behavior H. Conflict management I. Supportive behavior J. Overcoming communication barriers 2. Papers must identify the student's assumed culture/co-culture and differences. Work does not have to be a “paper” per se. Students must, however, write a statement for each of the elements listed and enumerate or label said explanations. Work must be typed in 12-point Times New Romans, double-spaced, have one-inch margins, and be written clearly.

 

 

Post-Role-Play Paper 1. Students will write a reflection paper in which they discuss how they planned to achieve and were actually able to achieve specific communication goals during the role-play in which they acted as the initiator. Students must clearly and directly respond to the following in the paper and must cite (in current APA-format, visit https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/02/) independent research and course materials in their responses. A. Explain how their plan to apply various interpersonal skills during the scenario(s) was carried out or needed to be changed and whether or not they experienced any of the problems they believed they would encounter. B. Explain how their research on new or different cultures aided in their ability to overcome multicultural communication barriers and enhanced multicultural communication. C. Explain how they addressed problems in a manner that aided in the building of a supportive communication climate or assisted with conflict resolution. 2. Work must be typed in 12-point Times New Romans, double-spaced, and have one-inch margins. No cover page is required. Work does not have to be a “paper” per se. Students must, however, write at least one paragraph for each labeled item.
