Project #67980 - ENG Discussion - 1 post and 2 replies $20

Did you know that books are still banned and challenged at our libraries and within curriculum? Visit and research the following website:http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/banned/aboutbannedbooks/index.cfm

Is this a good or bad practice?  Explain your reasoning.

answer the above question with 175 words+ and reply 2 of my classmates' posts.

here are the two posts

1.I'm going to say this right away, I don't think books should be banned at all!  There is a difference between allowing children at a school to read books in the school library compared to allowing an entire city, county, state or country, to read the book.  For example, the book "50 Shades of Grey" is absolutely inappropriate to be placed in a school library and I doubt there is one in any but to go so far as to restrict each and every person from reading this book is absurd.  Books that are inappropriate or show conflicting ideas should have an age restriction on them to buy and check out.  I would like to discuss music and how the lyrics and message is extremely disgusting.  Any one can turn on the radio and listen to a song that cusses every few words, and even though they are censored you still understand what is being said.  They also continuously discuss sex and drugs yet children have easy access to this.  Banning and challenging books makes no sense when no one challenges or bans songs of any kind.  Some of the most famous and influential books that teach life lessons were banned at one time.  These include but are not limited to "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", "The Catcher in the Rye", and "The Scarlet Letter."

2.I do not support censorship of any kind. I believe both adults and children have a right to information. I believe the concept of decency has done more to harm our children than any amount of vulgar material ever could. The idea that you can censure anyone, for any reason, only reinforces the idea that it’s ok to discriminate against others. It marginalizes people allowing them to be dismissed as part of some undesirable subculture. We must all make an effort to protect speech in all its forms, no mater how profane or distasteful we may find it. The right to be heard is the essence off freedom. We cannot hide from the world by closing our eyes to the views of the people around us. This only server to reinforce the idea that we can assert our will over others, this is the stance of a cowered. True freedom means openly engaging the ideas you disagree with, not pushing them to the shadows.
