Project #69368 - Nutrition and GMO's

1) Last week, in a News item, I presented an example of what I framed as a “.com” versus “.edu” issue—with respect to the issue of popular (via TV programming) physician Dr. Mehmet Oz, who also serves in academic medicine at Columbia University (in cardiac surgery), being recommended for firing from his academic post by an outside group of (non “.com”) 10 physicians.

On one hand, he’s been accused of promoting non evidence-based medicine (called “quackery” in traditional medicine)—yet on another hand he has also taken a stand against controversial genetically modified foods (GMFs or GMOs) based on concerns that there may be harmful biological effects in the future that science does not yet have the capacity to measure. With regard to the latter, there is a body of scientists (including nutrition scholars) who voice similar concerned (there is a research article on this subject required for this discussion). In his rebuttal with regard to the latter – he asserts that at least one of the physicians has biased, financial interests in promoting GMOs. (One of the arguments against GMOs has been that the American public has not even been given the opportunity to choose their position before GMOs were introduced in mass, commercial agriculture—which they consider a forced experiment). He also argues that he has been doing more to help people prevent chronic disease in the first place – through behavior modification (especially diet and exercise changes in a proactive way).

For this assignment, you are to:

1) View each of the videos/news articles (including the original letter from the 10 physicians and Dr. Oz’s rebuttal) in the links below, and also review the article on genetically modified foods that is posted in News. (The scientific article by Dona & Arvanitoyannis (2009) is a bit of a tedious read – but you are expected to download and read it to garner the essential points—which should not be problematic.)

2) Discuss breifly the pros and cons to each position and express your view on the question of do you think the 10 physicians and Columbia University have at least some legitimate claims against Dr. Oz (with respect to whether his integrity as an academic has been compromised and thus compromises the reputation of the Ivy league school by allowing him to stay) or whether how he is balancing his two positions (commercial and academic) are okay the way they are.

3) Cite from the GMO article as well as refer to the info in the web links.

*****NOTE**** This is a very simple assigment, not to be thought to deeply on just review the articles and briefly discuss the pros and cons with APA citation
