Project #69513 - Research Paper on The Great Gatsby

Composition II research paper

Write a six-page research paper with a separate cover sheet and a separate works cited page using the MLA format analyzing your assigned classic novel on an anti-hero or anti-heroes. You may also use aspects from other academic disciplines such as psychology, sociology, philosophy et al for discussion purposes.

Analytical research paper topics (CHOOSE ONE):

Topic 1 -- Identify and explain the theme of imperfections that separate the anti-hero from typicaly “heroic” characters such as selfishness, ignorance, bigotry et al and presenting textual evidence in the form of direct citations from both the book and the critical sources (MLA format).

Topic 2 -- Identify and explain the lack of an anti-hero’s positive qualities such as courage, physical prowess, and fortitude presenting textual evidence in the form of direct citations from both the book and the critical sources (MLA format).

Topic 3 -- Discuss the qualities normally belonging to villains that may be tempered with more human, identifiable traits such as confusion, self-hatred et al. presenting textual evidence in the form of direct citations from both the book and the critical sources (MLA format).

Topic 4 – Discuss the possibly noble but ambiguous motives pursued by the anti-hero by the belief that “the ends justify the means,” and presenting textual evidence in the form of direct citations from both the book and the critical sources (MLA format).

Instructions for the research:

Remember that it is essential to use both primary (the books itself) and secondary sources (critical articles) for your citations and textual evidence. Secondary sources should only support and enrich your analysis of the novels (primary sources)! Also, you may want to schedule an interview with an expert on your subject.

Remember that a Works Cited page constitutes a separate page (needed in your final draft).

In your paper, present each secondary source in a signal phrase (MLA format).

1. In your opening paragraph coin a clearly defined thesis statement that states or implies your main idea that will be explored in the essay.

2. Each paragraph following your introduction should incorporate direct MLA citations. Follow the format for the “body of the paragraph in an analytical essay” (organization within a paragraph) as shown in the “Composition” handout (to be distributed in class).
