Project #69702 - Campaign paper

You will analyze a US House or Senate race. Races (House districts or Senate races) have been assigned by the instructor.  Note that House races have a district number. Senate races list only a state. Your analysis should contain:

1. A discussion of major and third party candidates. Who are the candidates? What are their backgrounds? Have they held prior elected office? What are their political parties? Is one of the candidates an incumbent? Is it an open seat? (Wikipedia and Ballotpedia are good places to start here. Then I would simply Google (or Yahoo) the candidates names.)

2. A discussion of the nomination process. Were the candidates nominated by primary or caucus? Was it a competitive process or relatively easy for the candidates to win nomination? (See the helpful hints in 1.)

3. A discussion of campaign finance. You should address the topic of campaign finance and fundraising by the candidates. Typically, incumbents raise more money than challengers. Did you find this to be the case? Do you get a sense of the source of funding (in-state v. out-of-state; individual contributions v. groups)? (http://www.fec.gov/data/CandidateSummary.do?format=html&election_yr=2012)

4. A discussion of voter participation. Who won? What was turnout? (You should Google the election office of the state that your race represents)

Your paper should 3-5 pages long and is due in the class dropbox by May 8. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and papers containing plagiarism will receive zero points.
