Essay 5 (200 points)

Readings: Flannery O’Connor’s “Good Country People” (2428); N. Scott Momaday’s The Way to Rainy Mountain (2504); Anaya’s “The Christmas Play” (2515);  Kingston’s “No Name Woman” (2557); Ginsberg’s Howl (2732); Plath’s “Lady Lazarus” (2778) and “Daddy” (2781); and Li-Young Lee, all poems (2848). Be sure to read the introductions to each of the authors.

Select one work from this week’s readings and make a case that this work does or does not belong in the American literature canon for a course like ours, a college survey course of American writers.

Unlike the previous essays in the course, this essay absolutely requires the use of secondary sources.

1,000 words.

All essays are due on Wednesday prior to midnight of the week assigned. All essays must be Microsoft Word or RTF and in MLA format. Font must be Arial or Times New Roman and 12- point type for the text. Double-space all essays.

What did you learn about your own preferences and attitudes about literature?  What did you learn from others?  What did you learn from the authors whose works you read?  Provide specific details when answering all the questions in this self assessment and support your details with in-depth examples.  (50 points)

Each journal is to be answered in no less than 300 words. Although these are journal entries, put them in essay format. (For example, multiple paragraphs are required in an essay).
