Project #70649 - Project Management

Discussion: Metacognition

Metacognition is the study of human thought—specifically it is thinking about thinking. Metacognition can reveal fascinating insights about the human thought process. Like all human beings, you possess biases and obstacles to critical thinking you may not be aware of. Conversely, you may possess hidden creative talents or innovative thought processes you have yet to discover. More than likely, you have some of both. The following exercise is designed to get you thinking about how you think, or engaging in metacognition.

Consider the following three words: bell, frog, and apple. Put these in what you perceive is the best order (alphabetically is not an option). Now think about your thinking. That is, reflect on how you thought about ordering the words. Did you have a lot of ideas or was it a struggle? Once you started the process, did additional ideas begin to flow?

As you formulate your initial Discussion posting and prepare replies to your colleagues’ postings, review your class readings and conduct additional research in the Walden Library. Contemplate the following statements and questions about thinking and incorporate them into your writing as you formulate your response. You do not necessarily have to answer these directly, but they are intended to stimulate your critical thinking process, and they should form a background for your response. Evidence of your reasoning will be a component of your weekly Discussion grade.

Consider what approaches you took and what influenced your thinking as you completed the exercise that was described in the previous paragraphs.

Reflect on circumstances you have observed where traditional thinking was ineffective. In those situations, identify reasons why the traditional approach may have failed and delineate a strategy using alternative modes of thinking that may have led to more positive results.

Ponder the advantages of using a variety of approaches in your thinking and specify circumstances you now face where you can apply new strategies.

Identify circumstances when using a variety of types of thinking may be beneficial to a manager. Consider specific examples based on your experience, readings, or observations.

1. a scholarly response based on your research, your critical thinking, and your own experiences. In your response, you should:

Post one of the ways that you ordered the three words and an explanation of your thinking.

Describe a situation you now face that may benefit from a different approach to thinking. Discuss things you can do to generate new ways of thinking and explain how the readings from this week impacted your strategies.

How can an awareness of different types of thinking influence your approach to management?

Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s resources and any additional sources.
